In my twenty-five years supporting the government I have gone from the help desk to the CIO desk. Both in and out of government I have worked with the DOE National Labs to produce cutting edge technology to identify and defend against foreign APTs, created programs that have saved over $300M in the last 5 years on license costs for the government, and was the US Security and Compliance Lead for one of the largest CSPs in the world.
I have worked in Government, for small companies, and large companies. At every stop I found straight talk, hard work, focusing on the people, and doing the right thing always leads to success.
I use this experience to help companies with the following:
Rocky Campione has been solving problems and delivering unique solutions for the government for more than twenty-five years. He is the former Chief Information Officer at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Director of the Department’s Artificial Intelligence Technology Office (AITO), Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security, and Senior Advisor to the deputy Secretary. He has also worked in industry as the lead for US Security and Compliance and HIPAA Security Official for one of the world’s largest Cloud Service Providers and VP for Federal and Cyber Solutions for both small and large companies. Helping them win more than $1B in prime contracts with DOE, DOI, FBI, and commercial industry.
As DOE’s CIO during the last two-years of the Trump Administration, he led the teams that deployed multiple cloud environments, modernized the Department’s desktop and collaboration environments, led the Department to maximum telework during COVID, created a new concept for Enterprise Agreements that have saved over $300M, and deployed several innovative security tools to monitor, detect, and respond to aggressive cyber threat actors.
From 2009 to 2019, Rocky worked for a small business where his teams migrated more than 300,000 Federal users to the Cloud, provided application development solutions for national security clients, and delivered cybersecurity solutions to both the Federal Government and Fortune 100 companies. He also worked with the DOE’s Office of Electricity to develop of the Risk Management Process (RMP) for the electricity subsector, published in 2012.
From 2004 to 2009, he was appointed to several positions as part of the George W. Bush Administration at DOE. His last position at the Department was Senior Advisor to the Deputy Secretary where he served as his Chief of Staff. He also served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security where he was responsible for issues involving cybersecurity, the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, and the National Nuclear Security Administration. He joined DOE as advisor to the CIO. Prior to that he served the Bush administration in the State Department as the web manager for the 2004 G8 Summit.
In 2002 – 2003, Rocky took a break from government to work in Hollywood on a TV show for NBC and Universal Studios called “Mister Sterling.” There he provided input on the life of a congressional staffer and helped the writers, directors and producers understand how a US Senate office works.
Rocky started his career in the US Senate. He worked for the Senate Budget Committee, US Senator George Voinovich (R-OH), and Senator George Allen (R-VA). It was Senator Allen who gave him the name Rocky.
Rocky is a proud alumnus of Syracuse University and received his MS in Technology Management from George Mason University.
